Atari Jaguar

Atari Jaguar logo
"Do the math."

Sure, the Jaguar is not the best console of its time. You might be better off getting a 3DO, N64, or PSX. Plus the controller is garbage (the 6-button "ProController" is a bit better), and the Jaguar CD add-on should come with a guarantee that it will not work... so we're not saying you should go get a Jaguar, BUT if you do have one, there are some very good games that might make it worth keeping.

The list[]

Box Title Genre Description
Jagavspbp1 Alien vs. Predator FPS Play as an Alien rescuing the Alien queen, a predator trying to kill the Alien queen, or as a marine trying to get the fuck out. Marine campaign is by far the best, although all three of the campaigns are good. Framerate is on the sluggish side though.

Usually on the Top 10 of Jaguar games lists, even though the ports of Doom and Wolfenstein 3D are definitely better.

Another World Atari Jaguar cover Another World Action-adventure An experiment goes wrong and a scientist is transported to an alien world where everything is out to kill him. Homebrew port of the French classic. Buy it here.
B AttackOfTheMutantPenguins front-1- Attack of the Mutant Penguins Action A Jaguar exclusive, you play as a penguin or some cupcake thing and collect treasure, save your penguin friends etc.
Brutallfootball Brutal Sports Football Sports/Action This game is the tits, and you wouldn't know by looking at it, but this is a must own title, even for non-sports fans. Has little to do with football, and plays more like Ultimate Frisbee, giving it a feel like the cult classic "Deathrow" for Xbox. Object is to score the ball in the opponent's goal, and do so by beating the hell out of the opposing players, using punches, kicks, and 14 different powerups that appear on the field like bombs and axes. Decapitate an opposing player, and they are gone for good. Win by decpitating every opposing player or having the most points when the time runs out. Intense multiplayer makes this game hold up even today. Only thing holding back is a shitty password system and occassional frame rate problems.
Pic01-Cannon-Fodder-1- Cannon Fodder Strategy/Shooter Basically you control a squad of soldiers, and you have to complete the objective of a mission, divided into phases. Whoever survives the mission gets a promotion and becomes a bit better. Missions get pretty complex and require some creative thinking later on. Also a definite must-have for the Jag.
B Defender2000 front-1- Defender 2000 Scrolling shooter Hugely upgraded port of the arcade classic, from the same guy who did Tempest 2000. Trippy electronic soundtrack.
DoomBox-1- Doom FPS Great port, developed in-house by id themselves! Most console ports of the era (SNES being the exception) are derivative of this one (Engine and Doom 1 Maps). but for some reason, there's no music during gameplay. Main reason music is absent is the DSP is handing collision detection. Just put the excellent PS1 doom music and you're g2g.
Fight For Life Jaguar cover Fight For Life: Limited Edition Fighting "Wait, doesn't this one always appear in those 'worst games ever' lists?" Yes, it does, and for a good reason. The programmer was getting shafted by Atari, so he decided to withold the final version of the game until he finally got paid. So Atari said "fuck it" and just released some horrible 60%-finished version instead. Which is obviously not what we're recommending.

You see, many years later, the poor guy let some Jaguar fansite have the code for the finished version, and they released the massively improved unofficial "Limited Edition". Good luck getting it, though: only 28 numbered cartridges were ever produced, and even the ROM is about impossible to find. [1]

Flashback Atari Jaguar cover Flashback Action-adventure A young secret agent invents a portable device to analyze molecular density, finds that certain people are actually shapeshifting aliens, and they have his memory erased. The best-selling French game ever, and an absolutely fantastic cinematic platformer. Back in the day, those vector cutscenes were utterly stunning! Also released for several other systems (the Mega Drive version is also great and may be the easiest to find, the SNES port is butchered).
B IronSoldier front-1- Iron Soldier FPS Play as a mech in first-person view. Fuck shit up. Though it hasn't aged well it's still a blast to play. Has a sequel which came on cart and CD, thogh the CD version is preferable and easier to find.
Jaguar-64-pinball-fantasies-box-front Pinball Fantasies Pinball Sim Enhanced port of the classic Amiga game, and likely the best game on the Jaguar!
B Pitfall front-1- Pitfall: the Mayan Adventure Platformer Best version, though the 32X version is close.
B Raiden front-1- Raiden Vertical Shmup A good port of the arcade game. Great graphics, no slowdown, perfect music. Only annoying thing is that the score panel takes up a fucking third of the screen.
B Rayman front-1- Rayman Platformer Saturn, PSX, and Jag ports are nearly identical, but this version has inferior music. Be warned that the Jag version costs significantly more than the PSX and SAT versions. Excellent platformer.
Sensiblesoccer-1- Sensible Soccer Sports Simple, yet terribly addicting.
200px-Skyhammer-1- Skyhammer FPS You're in a space ship and you shoot stuff. HUD covers most of the screen, which is annoying, but great fun otherwise. Be prepared to shell out some cash for this one.

From the same dudes behind AvP.

Super burnout-1- Super Burnout Motorcycle Racing One of the few awesome racing games on the Jag. Great sense of speed.
Tempest 2000-1- Tempest 2000 Fixed Shooter Probably the best game on the console. First of all, this soundtrack is pure awesome. In fact, the soundtrack was even released on its own awesome CD. You play as a ship, fixed on the edge of a colorful "web" and you shoot incoming shit and get powerups. Very addictive. Also on PS1 and Saturn, not to mention the fantastic unofficial PC remake, Typhoon 2001.
B Worms front-1- Worms Strategy Control a team of Worms and destroy the opposing teams with various weapons at your disposal. A good port of the PC game.
