The List[]

Don't forget to check the Upcoming games page

A-on is short for Always Online. For this list, it means that the game requires an internet connection to have all of its features. If the game servers or the internet are down then the game will not work correctly. In short, this game will most likely not be functional outside of this console gen as game servers are taken down due to games getting older.

Have you played these games? They need a description to be added onto the list:

  • Omen of Sorrow
  • Spyro: Reignited Trilogy
  • Scarlet Nexus
  • NEO The World Ends With You
  • Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time

Cover Title Genre A-On Description
13sentps4 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim Strategy Visual Novel No Fantastic sci-fi adventure by Vanillaware with dense writing and an excellent story. Gorgeous, hand-drawn 2D visuals and limited exploration are punctuated by semi-real-time strategy combat between mechs and combat in grid-based battlefields. The combat isn't too exciting, but the writing and thirteen-person cast are amazing, to say nothing of the art direction and soundtrack. Performance isn't perfect, but works fine.

Also available on Nintendo Switch

Acecombat7 Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown Flight Combat No Ace Combat is back! After multiple pathetic attempts to westernize or go free-to-play, Bandai Namco finally said "fuck it" and let Project Aces make a traditional style game again. After a twelve year wait the results are pretty fucking good. The graphics are amazing and the game plays like a dream. The story is...pretty dissapointing. It tries to hit those sweet melodramatic notes from past games but kind of falls on it's face with awkward pacing and generally uninteresting characters. Overall it's maybe a slight step down from the PS2 Holy Trinity but it's still very deserving of it's name. Has online multiplayer dogfights that are awesome but anyone still playing it is stupidly good. If you can get enough friends together for a private lobby it's a lot of fun.

Also available on PC

Ai1ps4 AI: The Somnium Files Puzzle Visual Novel No Sci-fi detective adventure by Spike Chunsoft, with cel-shaded anime art style and very strong writing. Investigate crimes by entering and exploring the dreams of suspects, where you solve puzzles in fully-3D environments. Requires playing through multiple branching paths to get the whole story, but allows you to pick things up at any narrative branching point using a flowchart.
Ai2ps4 AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative Puzzle Visual Novel No Sequel to the previous game, starring new dual protagonists. Another sci-fi detective adventure with colorful characters and an intriguing, near-future world. Allows you to play without spoiling the first game for yourself, but it's still recommended that you play them in order. Story and writing are equally fantastic, if not better than the last (with some bold twists).
AlienIsolation(PS4) Alien: Isolation Survival Horror No Survive in a ship full of hostile aliens, malfunctioning androids, and paranoid crew mates out to kill everything that moves. Actually has decent AI unlike the other Aliens game on this platform, so don't get the two mixed up!

Pacifist protip: the stun baton is a lethal weapon to humans.

Asssassin'sCreedIVBlackFlag(PS4) Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag Action-Adventure Yes Pirates... and assassins! Come for the murderboating, stay for the colorful characters and the ability to explore more than ever before murderboating. Yes, you can swim this time! Beware of sharks. Sea shanties are the only collectibles worth chasing.

ACUnityPS4 Assassin's Creed Unity Action-Adventure No Despite a rather catastrophic launch (fixed with patches since) and being probably the most controversial game in the series, Assassin's Creed Unity is, in many ways, the definitive Assassin's Creed experience: best map, best parkour, great customization, actual stealth mechanics, a great assassination system (similar to the first AC), refined combat, and plenty of things to do. It's also much more difficult than the other games. The story, while nothing to write home about, is pretty nice and features an established Assassin Order controlling things in the shadows, which was often missing in AC games. Also you get to hang out with Napoleon. It also features co-op which can be fun when it works.

Yes, there are arguably better games in the series, like Black Flag and Origins, but these got away with being completely different games with a little AC sprinkled in there, while Unity plays the AC card fully. But with its relative failure, the series was completely revamped, so in a way Unity is also the last "real" Assassin's Creed. Its sequel, Syndicate, while similar and still enjoyable, toned down on most of Unity's additions, and is overall underwhelming, more generic and less bold. And then the games after that went full-on Witcher clones.

It's very much a "love it or hate it" kind of game, and if you hate Assassin's Creed and Ubisoft you're probably gonna hate this too, but if you're new to the series or looking for THE Assassin's Creed that does AC to the fullest, you might enjoy this a lot.

ArkhamKnight(PS4) Batman: Arkham Knight Action-Adventure No Sequel to Batman: Arkham City. After Joker's death, Gotham City goes mad as Scarecrow teams up with the mysterious Arkham Knight to wreak havoc. You know the deal by now - punch bad guys, do detective work, punch more bad guys. But this time, you can use the Batmobile, a feature that is great at first until they ask you to keep using it over and over again. Also, Scarecrow-induced hallucinations give you even more Joker screentime, which may or may not tickle your fancy depending on how much you like Mark Hamill which makes the best use of Mark Hamill; nobody but Rian Johnnson hates based Mark. While it has its rough edges, it's still a worthy conclusion to the Batman Arkham series.

Note - As WB Games is publishing this title, there is already a metric fuckload of DLC cut up and sold in tiny bite-sized packages (unless you bought the season pass). Most opinions on the DLC are somewhat mixed, especially concerning how short they are, so I would suggest holding out for the inevitable GOTY edition if you want it THAT much. Which you don't, since the '66 Batman costume is free for PS4, and that's all the bonus content you'll ever need.

Bayovank Bayonetta & Vanquish 10th Anniversary Bundle Action No Two of the greatest action games of all time in one package. In Bayonetta, you play as a dominatrix witch who needs to rediscover her past by killing demonic angels and angelic demons. Vanquish is a fast paced third person shooter where you play as a government agent in a super suit trying to recapture a space station from Russian forces.
Bloodborne Bloodborne Action-RPG

Horror

No Considered to be a spiritual successor to the Demon's/Dark Souls games, as they share the same development team and director. Bloodborne ditches the dark fantasy approach for a Lovecraftian one with a Victorian-style city, but the elliptical storytelling and grotesque monster designs prevail. Gameplay is also similar: dying is inevitable and pressing on is a game of risk vs. reward, but combat is much more offensively-oriented, ditching shields in favor of pistols and featuring a small amount of very distinct melee weapons. As always, online multi-player allows you to summon companions for help or invade other players' games. A very challenging and richly-detailed experience that fans of the Souls series will feel at home with, if not outright prefer. The Game of the Year is the recommended version, since it includes The Old Hunters DLC (which is essential for the base game) into one disc.
Bloodstained-Ritual-of-the-Night Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Metroidvania No Koji Igarashi's return to video games after almost a decade comes in the form of a spiritual successor to his amazing run of Castlevania games. Bloodstained is another very good one of those, but don't expect anything super new or exciting. The graphics are pretty ugly but the music is solid and the gameplay is a lot of fun. If you've played Iga's Castlevania games then you know what you're in for and if not then play at least Symphony of the Night first.

BrothersATaleofTwoSons Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons Adventure No A short but fun game with an isometric view, now in physical form. Control two brothers on a journey to help their ailing father.
Controlps4 Control Action/Adventure/TPS No From the folks who made the first two Max Payne games and Alan Wake. You play as a fugly lady looking for her brother and finds herself as the new director of this X-Files style government agency tasked with overseeing and covering up supernatural occurrences. Over the course of the game you acquire cool powers and upgrades to your gun. Has some small metroidvania elements. The main appeal is the style and world design which are dripping in cool supernatural conspiracy shit.

Also available on PC. GOG or Steam recommended.

Crash Bandicoot N-sane Trilogy Platformer/WOAH No Crash is freaking back! This collection is a wonderful remake of the first (and the only remarkable) three games of the series, originally made by Naughty Dog. Graphics are are superb but the physics, despite being good and on point, are not 100% accurate to the original games, making the learning curve surprisingly steep at the beginning, but nothing that will make you tear your hair out (unless you're going for the 3 platinum trophies).
Crash-team-racing-nitro-fueled-ps4-nuevo-sellado-D NQ NP 780066-MLA31256643685 062019-F Crash Team Racing Nitro-fueled Kart racing/WOAH Sorta A faithful remake of the all time classic Crash Team Racing from the PS1. It features all the original characters, modes, tracks and the adventure mode of the original, along with all the characters and tracks (no adventure mode unfortunately) from Crash Nitro Kart, but with the satisfying, easy to learn hard to master gameplay of the first one. Beenox has been adding more content, and now characters and cars from other Crash games (even the fucking Checkpoint crate made it in) and Spyro are available. Prepare to get destroyed online unless you know all the shortcuts and hidden mechanics, but it is still worth trying it to get Wumpa Coins, in-game currency needed to buy new characters and cosmetics (you can grind them offline (still needs an internet connection though) but it takes way longer, or buy them with real life money, but that's shitty)
Ds4ps4 Dark Souls: Remastered Action RPG No A port of the original Dark Souls and the Artorias of the Abyss expansion. Looks nicer and runs better(especially the Blighttown area). Massively influential action-RPG with a sophisticated dark fantasy setting and cryptic, melancholy storyline. Spiritual successor to Demon's Souls. Explore an inter-connected world full of dangerous enemies and well-hidden secrets while leveling up your character according to your preferred build. There's plenty of variety and replay value. Features asymmetrical online co-op and versus play. Notoriously difficult and mysterious. Considered one of the best games of its generation.

Also available on PC

DarkSoulsIIScholaroftheFirstSin(PS4) Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin Action RPG No An upgraded version of Dark Souls II. Includes all of the previously released DLC. Enemy placement is wildly different from the PS3 version. In fact, if you play this shit for the lore, stick with the PS3 version because the enemy placement makes no godamn sense anymore.

Also available on PC

Dark-souls-iii-the-fire-fades-edition-ps4 Dark Souls III Action RPG No The final game in the series, this time with Miyazaki back at the helm. Expect a faster pace this time around, as the team was still fresh off of Bloodborne. This one is generally considered better than Dark Souls II, but not quite as good as DaS 1 nor Demon's Souls.

Ashes of Ariandel is a 3 hour piece of shit with little content and two bosses, but the Ringed City makes up for it and effectively ends the entire series. The Fire Fades Edition contains all DLC, so if you've waited to get a complete edition while waiting for a reasonable price, then now's the time.

Also available on PC

Ddunps4 Darkest Dungeon: Ancestral Edition Dungeon Crawler / RPG No Venture into the Darkest Dungeon, where the selling point is the stress system, in which your heroes will reach a breaking point if you do not take proper precautions, and pushes you into making harsh decisions. The controls take some time to get used to, and the game will punish you if you venture unprepared.
Dcps4 Dead Cells Action / Platformer Rogue-Lite No Fantastic 2D rogue-lite with a metroidvania feel. You play as a lump of reanimating cells occupying a corpse trying to end the cycle of death plaguing the world. Hundreds of possible builds with weapons, powerups, and abilities that can be unlocked for future runs. Tough but fair combat that can be made harder with various challenges you can find around the levels that grant more loot.

Also available on PC

Death Stranding PS4 Cover Death Stranding Action/Delivery Sorta A Hideo Kojima game. You play as Norman Reedus a delivery boy in a post apocalyptic wasteland, in your quest to defeat Mads Mikkelsen and Troy Baker, connect what's left of the US to the internet, and rescue the future president.

Storywise it hits several Metal Gear-esque beats, with excellent atmosphere and worldbuilding, along with a nice cast of interesting characters and enjoyable villains. Gameplay largely focuses on taking orders and delivering them through harsh terrain. This involves inventory management that emphasizes weight and balance, plotting and building routes to your destination, and overcoming the impressive amount of hazards in its enormous maps. Despite the walking simulator meme, combat can be pretty common and as the game goes on you'll have a decent arsenal of weapons to choose from. A healthy amount of boss battles also make a welcome comeback compared to the lack of them in MGSV.

Also notably the first one-and-done narrative Kojima's written since Policenauts; no obvious sequel hooks here.

The most divisive game of 2019 due to its slow pace and goofy product placement, you'll either love or hate it.

Also coming to PC in 2020.

Also available on PC

Detoilet Detroit: Become Human Interactive Story No Think Heavy Rain but with robots. Set in the year 2038, you play as three separate protagonists: Connor, Kara, and Markus, all of whom are androids. Connor is a prototype detective android solving the "deviancy" mystery of androids suddenly displaying human emotions and free will, and stopping their leader. Markus is a former in-home assistant who finds himself within a community of deviant androids. Kara is a housekeeping and child-caring android who is suddenly forced to flee her home with the child she's been caring for in tow.

The game features a large supporting cast and has almost 100 different endings dependent upon player choice. Be prepared for a story full of difficult decisions and a lot of "does this remind you of anything?" as the game explores a multitude of social implications caused by the existence of androids.

Dmc13ps4 Devil May Cry HD Collection Action / Hack 'n' Slash No Two of the greatest action games of all time as well as one of the worst, upscaled in HD. Devil May Cry and Dante's Awakening are masterpieces that shouldn't be missed. Skip DMC2.
Dmc5 Devil May Cry 5 Character Action/Rockin' Buttmetal No Like many Japanese AAA game companies in the previous generation, Capcom's attempts to westernize their IPs ended up as a horrible embarrassing failure. Fortunately they learned their lesson and as a result we have the first mainline DMC game in 11 years. You play as either Dante, Nero, or a new guy named V who summons the bosses from DMC1 to fight on his behalf. V's levels are cool but only really hold up on a first playthrough. Dante and Nero really shine with each of them building off their previous incarnations in DMC4. The game delivers on the cuhrayzee and then some which is all it needed to do after the crummy reboot.
DiabloIIIUltimateEvilEdition(PS4) Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition Action RPG No The DRM issues from the original PC version do not apply to UEE, due to the offline mode that the PC version is lacking.

It's Diablo. If you don't know what to expect from Diablo, you're underaged. Not nearly as good as Diablo II, but nobody needs to port that anyway.

Dishps4 Dishonored Definitive Edition Action / Stealth No Action-sandbox game partially inspired by the Thief games. Takes place in a Victorian-style industrial city filled with rich elites and extreme poverty hit by a horrible plague carried by rats, causing many to shamble around in a zombie-like state. You are an assassin framed for the murder of the empress, and you must do tasks for an underground movement to try and overthrow the conspirators to the throne. You can build your character around either action or stealth(or both but it is not recommended) and whichever route you take ultimately shapes the ending of the game. Both playstyles are fun but there are significantly more options for an action playthrough. Each level is akin to Thief or Deus Ex where you have a starting location and a list of tasks and can go about accomplishing them in numerous ways. The Definitive Edition includes all the DLC, including additional story content from the perspective of one of the main game's villians.
DragonBallFighterZPS4 Dragon Ball FighterZ Fighting No A super fast-paced fighter (think Marvel vs Capcom) with Dragon Ball Z/Super characters, excellent even if you're not a fan of Dragon Ball. Takes some pages from Guilty Gear Xrd, using the same 3D-styled graphics made to look like 2D sprites. Story mode is what you'd expect from fighting games these days but the character interactions are surely entertaining.
Dq11sps4 Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition JRPG No Enhanced version of DQXI, now with extra content and a fully-playable, SNES-style, sprite-based mode on top of the standard 3D presentation. Lengthy campaign, in-depth turn-based combat system, charming characters, and an Akira Toriyama-designed fantasy world. A great entry point into Dragon Quest, and an unforgettable JRPG overall.

Dddaps4 Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen Action-RPG No Underrated Capcom action-RPG. Medieval fantasy in an open-world setting. This game's story, variety, presentation, and world size are all somewhat underwhelming, but it shines in the combat, which is thrillingly fast and fun, kind of like a medieval Devil May Cry with elements of Dark Souls and Shadow of the Colossus. There are several classes to try and they're all fun to play, including the spellcasting ones. No multi-player, sadly, but you can trade your A.I. companions with others online for fun and profit.

Large-0
Driveclub Racing No A somewhat arcade-y racing game with nice controls and excelent graphics.

Used to have a free/trial version for Plus subscribers with plenty of tracks and cars, but they've removed it since people weren't buying the full game (kek). It's a cheap and excelent option for fans of the genre, specially because NFS is sucking nowadays.

Dyinglight Dying Light Zombie Dropkicking No The Dead Island guys decided to make a fun game this time around. You parkour around the zombie apocalypse in order to save your friends from a manaiac. Has co-op which is definitely the recommended way to play. Has inexplicably been supported with one paid expansion and a shit ton of free DLC in the years after its release.

Also available on PC

Edf41ps4 Earth Defense Force 4.1 – The Shadow of New Despair TPS No An upgraded version of EDF 2025 from the previous gen. You hunt hundreds of giant bugs in huge destructable cities with a goofy Starship Troopers vibe. Low budget but a shit ton of fun. Has local and online co-op.
Edf5 Earth Defense Force 5 TPS Yes Another classic chaotic EDF game, featuring a mind-boggling 110 missions(140 with DLC) all about shooting bugs, frogs, grey aliens, and more with hundreds of unlockable weapons, vehicles, and mechs spread across four unique classes and five difficulties. Great for dozens of hours in both single player and online co-op(including one online exclusive mission).
Erps4 Elden Ring Action Adventure No An open world Souls game lauded for its exploration, combat, and world design made in conjuction with George R.R. Martin. You're a Tarnished, an exile from the lands you occupy who has returned following a catastrophic event that has torn the land asunder. Unlike most "open" world games you can approach the various lands and bosses in any order, with the ability to skip large portions of the game if you know where to go and who to fight. The PS4 version runs really poorly and should only be played as a last resort if you can't play on PC or PS5/XSX, but the game is worth the trouble if that is all you have.

FaryCry4(PS4) Far Cry 4 FPS/Action-Adventure No Go to Nepal. Ride elephants. Kill tigers. Shoot colorful enemies and restore temples. Have fun!

81J-uEoQ6WL. SL1500 Final Fantasy VII Remake Action-RPG/Dick-Chopping No A full remake of the Midgar section of Final Fantasy VII. Play as Cloud, mercenary, helping out AVALANCHE to save the planet against the evil corporation Shinra. Be warned that the story isn't a 1:1 adaptation of the original, and there are a couple of bold changes, especially near the end. Some love it, some don't. This is directed by Tetsuya Nomura, so if you hate Kingdom Hearts and other Nomura shenanigans, you might also hate this. Regardless, it knows what it's doing, and "changing destiny" is a main theme in this story, so it's not completely out of nowhere. Also, the game kind of expects you to already know the story of FF7, but you can still enjoy this as a newcomer.

The gameplay is a refinement of Square's previous attempts at mixing up real-time and turn-based combat, and is arguably the best combat system of the series in recent memory. Think FF15, but more grounded, with an ATB gauge, multiple playable characters, and XIII's stagger system (but not annoying this time). The materia system is basically the same as the original, adapted to the new gameplay. It gets really fun once you get the hang of it. The game is gorgeous, albeit very linear (it's not as bad as XIII but not as good as X in that regard), with a couple of areas with side quests and mini-games. The main cast is more lovable than ever, and that Uematsu soundtrack is god-tier.

It's a great imperfect game, with many things to love about it, and a lot of charm.

Final Fantasy X - X2 HD Remaster PS4 Final Fantasy X/X2 HD Remaster RPG No A remaster of Final Fantasy X International and Final Fantasy X-2 International + Last Mission for the PS3, the updated graphics look nice but the FMVs are just the PS2 FMVs re-rendered in 1080p and the voices aren't changed but the addition of the International bonuses and the HD graphics are worth replaying this game. Has the option to change the soundtrack to the original PS2 soundtrack or the re-arranged PS3 and PS Vita versions.

Also available on PS3 and on PS Vita. PS3 version has a bonus Music Blu-ray OST disc. PS Vita splits the two games from each other and doesn't include the bonus Music Blu-ray OST disc on the PS3 but offers us good portability. Supports cross-play (you can transfer saves between the PS3, PS Vita and PS4 versions) but not cross-buy. Both PS3 and PS Vita versions have downgraded graphics and no option to play with the PS2 soundtrack.

Every console version only includes the english voices.

Final-fantasy-xiv-1- Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn MMORPG Yes Significantly better than FFXIV's first outing, which was absolutely terrible. Squeenix listened to all the complaints and criticisms, and more-or-less created the game people actually wanted (a WoW clone). The combat system is a little tired (press button to use skill/spell, and make sure to move out of the way of attacks), however the dungeons are superb, as is the overworld, art, graphics, and music. It also has selling/auctioning items, player to player interaction, forming parties and 'companies' (guilds), and has a decent storyline to boot. It has had a few issues going out, but they've been patching regularly to fix anything the community generally complains about. Overall, a decent MMO with a fantastic setting.
Final Fantasy Type-0 HD PS4 Final Fantasy Type-0 HD Action-RPG No Imagine Crisis Core but better with 14 different playable characters, playable summons, A WORLD MAP, chocobo breeding and a fantastic story. The gameplay is difficult and will kill you if you get careless but is fun and faster than Crisis Core because less "slot machine" bullshit. Much, MUCH, bloodier, gorier and violent than the previous Final Fantasy games.

Has updated graphics compared to the PSP version, as well as the option to change the voices to English or Japanese, no multiplayer (as if anyone cared about it), an exclusive alternate ending, an updated soundtrack and an exclusive demo for Final Fantasy XV for the Day One edition. Keep away from the English dub, it is the worst English dub Square has ever worked on (even worse than Final Fantasy X but not as bad as FF4 SNES). Has a somewhat spotty translation so get the PSP version if you are willing to pirate and you have PPSSPP or a PSP with CFW.

FFXVJP Final Fantasy XV Action-RPG No Well, here it is. After ten years of the rockiest series of development cycles since Duke Nukem Forever, you can finally get your hands on Final Fantasy XV, and thankfully it's not another Duke Nukem Forever.

As Prince Noctis, heir to the Lucian throne, you're tasked to go on a road trip with your three closest friends to the neighboring country of Tenebrae in order to marry your childhood girlfriend, Lunafreya. This innocent bachelor party turns into a quest for vengeance when your kingdom gets sacked by the evil Niflheim technocracy. Final Fantasy hijinks ensue as you sneak into military bases, crawl through absolutely brilliant dungeons (I'd even argue XV has the best dungeon designs in recent FF memory), race chocobos, go on fetch quests, and teleport like a madman smacking a bunch of classic Final Fantasy monsters around. What's not to love?

The main questline is short for an FF, averaging around 20-25 hours (around 30 with the DLC), but there's plenty of side content and minigames to fill your time. The Royal Edition comes with all of the paid story DLC, an online mode, the ability to ride around in a boat (with more fishing spots), and an expanded version of the final dungeon, along with cutscene and story updates, and is ultimately the best way to play the game.

One other note: I strongly suggest you watch the tie-in film Kingsglaive before playing the game, as a lot of very important plot elements take place there, and a major character is literally introduced seconds after that character's exit from the film. It is also recommended to watch the 5 free, short anime episodes titled Brotherhood on Youtube, as they provide a backstory for the main crew. You may want to hold off on watching the anime and Kingsglaive until after chapter 1 as they do technically spoil a major plot event.

FireproWWps4 Fire Pro Wrestling World Wrestling Sim Yes The first real Fire Pro game in over a decade. It returns to it's roots with 2D sprites at an isometric angle and the wrestling is reminiscent of the classic games. What puts this game over the top is not only the massive customization options but the ability to share any custom wrestlers, referees, and rings/arenas. For the console version you can go to their website and give them your PSN credentials in order to upload and download custom content, similar to steam's workshop feature for the PC version. The game also has licensed New Japan Pro Wrestling content including an odd adventure game style story mode. Some of the features require an internet connection which is a bummer but even just the core package alone is worth it.
Ghost Blade HD PS4 cover v1 Ghost Blade HD Shmup No A cool manic shooter, originally released on the Dreamcast, with some solid indie pedigree: the producer and the programmer of Pier Solar, plus the designer and the composer of Last Hope. Their main inspiration is distinctly - or even shamelessly - Cave's DonPachi series. Gorgeous highly detailed backgrounds and nice electronic soundtrack. Very enjoyable, but perhaps a bit on the short and easy side.
Sony-cd-playstation-4-ghost-of-tsushima Ghost of Tsushima Action-Adventure/ Being a Baddass No Made by the dudes who brought you iNfamous, but this time you're a Samurai and Mongols are trying to fuck your home town up take over.

Ghost of Tsushima is one of the best titles that the PlayStation 4 has to offer and an excellent homage to the way of the Samurai. The campaign flows perfectly, leading you on a journey of honour, tradition and inner conflict. Every part of Tsushima has been given a lot of time, thought and energy into by the team at Sucker Punch. The graphics are so pleasing on the eye, the score and sound work endlessly to surround you in an ever-changing narrative and the attention to detail is outstanding. The combat system at times can be hard, but when you time your blow perfectly, you feel invincible

GodofWarIIIRemastered God of War III Remastered Action-Adventure No The remastered port of God of War III in delicious 1080p and running at a silky 60fps. Picks up right where God of War II left off, so dust off that PS2 or PS3 if you need to jog your memory. Arguably the best game in the series and considered one of the best franchise finales in gaming. That is, until...
Godofwar
God of War (2018) Action-RPG No After killing everything with a pulse in Greece, Kratos heads north to Scandinavia, settles down, and starts a family. When his wife dies, Kratos takes his BOI on a nature hike and spectacular hijinks ensue.

Responding to criticism of Ascension being samey bullshit, Santa Monica Studios overhauled their latest entry from the ground up. Instead of his trusty Blades of Chaos/Athena/Whatever, Kratos now carries a magic axe that can fly into his hand like Thor's Hammer. The map gives you room to backtrack without being completely open world, there are deeper RPG elements beyond "pour blood into the thing you want stronger", your son is a useful sidekick who manages to not be annoying, and the plot is stronger than it's ever been. The more things change, though, the more they stay the same. The combat is still as brutal as always and is still accompanied with cutscenes dedicated to how killed Kratos can make his enemies, and the setpieces and soundtrack are still just as mindblowingly massive and beautiful as they've been since game 1. Really the only bad news is that titties are no longer a feature. If you can bear that you're in for another great entry into the franchise.

Also available on PC

Godzillaps4 Godzilla Kaiju Fighting No This game is bad by modern standards. It looks like shit and controls like shit. However, if you're willing to put up with it there's a remarkably fleshed out Godzilla game hidden under the bullshit. You go around destroying cities and the occasional rival Kaiju. Bamco were crazy for trying to charge full price for what is ostensibly a PS2 game but if you know what you're getting into going in it can be fun.
GGRev2PS4 Guilty Gear Xrd Rev2 Fighting No Fight colorful characters with other colorful characters in lovely 3D-as-2D art design levels. Extremely technical gameplay is complemented by extremely thorough tutorials that explain the systems about as well as possible. Guilty Gear is famous for the "Roman Cancel" system, which interrupts your actions for a cost to allow for combos beyond the scope of what the game normally allows, and Xrd features changes to make it more intuitive than it was in XX. The comprehensive fighting package is complemented by a visual novel-esque story mode with literally zero gameplay, but the story is surprisingly good if hard to follow at times. Revelator's story mode is a direct continuation of the story from -SIGN-. If you want to play the complete story you'll need to get both versions. Xrd -SIGN- has now been followed up by Xrd Revelator and Xrd Rev2, which feature more characters, content, and balance changes.
GundamBreaker3 Gundam Breaker 3: Break Edition Beat'em Up No You build a gundam by having it break the parts off other gundams. Import only. New Breaker is absolute trash get this instead.
GrandTheftAutoV(PS4) Grand Theft Auto V Action / Adventure / Open World No The sprawling sun-soaked metropolis of Los Santos is chock full of self-help coaches, starlets and C-List celebrities, once on top of the media world, now struggling to stay relevant in time of economic malaise and lowest-common-denominator reality TV. Amidst this madness, three unique criminals plan their own chances of survival and success: Franklin, a street-level hustler in search of opportunities for serious money; Michael, an ex-con whose "retirement" is a less rosy than he hoped it would be; and Trevor, a violent dude driven by the chance for a quick high and the next big score. Nearly out of options, the crew risks it all in a series of daring and dangerous heists that could set them up for life - one way or the other.

GravityrushREps4 Gravity Rush Remastered Action No A port of one of the few PSVita games worth getting. You play as a girl with amnesia who discovers she can manipulate the gravity around herself. It starts out as a fun little superhero game but the story goes in some crazy directions. The physical version had a very limited print run and is hard to find these days.
Gr2box Gravity Rush 2 Action No Fantasic followup to the first game. More abilities and a larger world allowing for expanded gravity hijinks. Also a really good story. Unfortunately it got lost in the shuffle of early 2017 releases and no one bought it, so don't expect anymore of these.
Hadesps4 Hades Action Rogue-like No Supergiant's biggest and most ambitious game yet. Play as Zagreus, the son of Hades himself, trying to escape the underworld and his father's minions with the help of the Greek Pantheon in the form of power-ups for your various weapons and abilities. The gameplay is solid but shockingly deep. Being a Supergiant game, the art and music are obviously top notch if you like the style, and at the very least are unique. The runs and bosses can get a little shallow after a while due to a general lack of variety but there's enough there to keep you going for a while with all the possible combos and various unlocks.
HITMAN-2 Hitman 3 Stealth/Puzzle Yes After getting dragged through the mud like every other Eidos ip in the early 2010s, Hitman made its triumphant return in 2016 with an amazing return on par with Blood Money. Hitman 3 is almost a level pack add-on to the first two games, with 5 main levels and a final story mission alongside some quality of life improvements. If you own the 2016 game and Hitman 2(or if you pay 60 extra bucks) you'll also be able to import all the maps and missions from those games to Hitman 3. You can also just buy the trilogy pack for $100 for all the content. There are also additional DLC missions to be added later to the game, as well as over a year of updates from the devs adding new missions inside each of the huge sprawling levels. Each level allows for a million ways to kill all your targets and there are various challenges you can do to unlock even more tools to carry over to different levels as well. The one major downside is an always-online requirement for unlocking content and leveling your character.

If you have all 3 games' content, Hitman 3 contains 21 levels and dozens of hours of replayability for most of them. It is a monster of a game and a masterpiece.

Hkps4 Hollow Knight Metroidvania No Beautifully animated Metroidvania, one of the best in the sub-genre. Pulls a lot from Dark Souls in terms of difficulty and story-telling style.
Horizon-zero-dawn-box-art Horizon Zero Dawn Action/Adventure No You play as a ginger cave woman fighting dinosaur mechs. The Killzone guys finally were allowed to make something new. The world is neat and the graphics are pretty but the gameplay is just kind of ok and it is bogged down in design-by-committee bullshit like item gathering for crafting, useless rarities, and milquetoast stealth mechanics. Story goes in some pretty interesting directions. Don't expect the next great open world masterpiece but there is some fun to be had here.

BULLSHIT this was one of the best open-world games I've ever played.

InFamousSecondSon(PS4) inFAMOUS: Second Son Action / Adventure / Open World No inFAMOUS Second Son is an action adventure game in which, surrounded by a society that fears them, superhumans are ruthlessly hunted down and caged by the Department of Unified Protection. Step into a locked-down Seattle as Delsin Rowe, who has recently discovered his superhuman power and is now capable of fighting back against the oppressive DUP. Enjoy your power as you choose how you will push your awesome abilities to the limit and witness the consequences of your actions as they affect the city and people around you.
InjusticeGodsAmongUsUltimateEdition(PS4) Injustice: Gods Among Us - Ultimate Edition Fighting No Lay the virtual smackdown on some of your favorite DC comic heroes and villians. Raven vs Cyborg? Batman vs Superman? Aquaman vs Captain Marvel (Shazaam)? Go for it! Also has a story mode that doubles as a tutorial to help players learn the ins and outs of this fighter as well as a challenge mode with tricky combat for the vets.

Injustice2 Injustice 2 Fighting No Picking up from where the first game left off, this is one gigantic love letter to DC, with a much more varied roster (fuck yeah Swamp Thing and Doctor Fate!), improving on everything from the first game and with one of the most epic stories ever on a fighting game (eat your heart out you stupid DC movie directors)!

DLC pack 1 adds Starfire, Red Hood and Sub-Zero, pack 2 adds Balck Manta, Raiden and Hellboy while pack 3 adds Atom, Enchantress and the freaking TMNT as a single character!

Katarero Katamari Damacy Reroll Ball Rollan No A remake of the PS2 classic. After the King of All Cosmos destroys the stars in a night of debauchery, his lilliputian son, the Prince, must roll up all sorts of objects on Earth to make new stars. The simple and addictive gameplay consists of rolling a ball (the titular katamari) in levels full of objects and people, which you must roll up to make the katamari increase in size; as it grows bigger, you can roll up bigger things, like cars, buildings and islands. The low-polygon, cel-shaded look and psychedelic visuals add to its charm, not to mention the notable, multi-genre soundtrack.

KOF-XIV The King of Fighters XIV Fighting No One of the greatest fighting game series is back! The series went full 3D, but keeping with the traditional 2D gameplay from previous entries 2.5D and with 50 selectable characters right out of the gate without any DLC bullshit.

The first DLC pack adds Whip, Yamazaki, Vanessa and Rock from Garou.

724308-la-jaquette-de-kingdom-hearts-the-story-so-far-full-1 Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far RPG No The latest Kingdom Hearts collection, comprising 1.5+2.5 HD Remix and 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue (man these titles were getting ridiculous). Don't bother if you already own these two collections because there's nothing more to it, unless you want a slightly classier packaging and the two discs in one box.

Otherwise, if you're planning on getting Kingdom Hearts III in January, you better get this; a mistake KH newcomers often make is to believe there are two main games, and the other games are just spin-offs. They're wrong. All the entries are main games, even the handheld games (hell, even the stupid mobile game set 1000 years before has important plot points), and from the look of it, KH3 will bring everything together, so if you want to get a chance to grasp what the fuck is going on in it, you're gonna have to play all of them.

Anyway, it's Kingdom Hearts. What started as babbie's first Final Fantasy featuring Disney worlds became its own full-fledged series, getting more and more ridiculously complex and edgy story-wise, but also very charming, with stories of friendship, light vs. DARKNESS, and all that good stuff.

Gameplay-wise, they all have something interesting going on, even if some episodes are weaker than others, there are no bad games per se in this.

In the end, you're getting 6 full games and 3 movies (the two Nintendo DS games and the mobile MMO were turned into movies) for a decent price, so if you didn't get into the beautiful clusterfuck that this series is yet, this is the ultimate collection to go with.

KH3 Kingdom Hearts III Action-RPG No You've already played this if you're into Kingdom Hearts, and you probably never will if you're not into it. Please don't start with this one if you're new to the series.

The game was bound to disappoint to some degree, SPOILER ALERT: WHERE DA FINAL FANTASY CHARACTERS AT?! but it's still pretty good. KH3 manages (a little clumsily) to conclude (or does it?) almost 20 years of this beautiful mess of a story. There's a little of every previous game in it, which can be pretty satisfying if you're a true fanboy who played all of them. Gameplay is as fun as usual and it has some really good moments.

The Re:Mind DLC adds a new story segment with other playable characters, Data fights against each Organization XIII member, a secret episode with a secret boss fight, and a couple other features. It is 30 bucks though, so it's really up to you if you want to extend the KH3 experience further.

KHMoM Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory Rhythm Action No Basically Theatrhythm Kingdom Hearts. Contains over 140 songs from the whole series, with neat gameplay and visuals. Not an essential entry in the series by any means, but it's a nice little gift to the fans after KH3 concluded the "Dark Seeker Saga".

Surprisingly, this isn't adding countless retcons and plot twists to the main story for once, as you're reliving the whole saga from Kairi's perspective, but it does open up at the end teasing things to come, so watch out for that.

Lastguardianus The Last Guardian Puzzle/Pet Simulator No A spiritual successor to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian pairs a young boy with a gigantic gryphon-like creature called a Trico. You and Trico are tasked with working together to escape an enigmatic fortress known as The Nest. Like its preceding games, the puzzles are fun and on point, the atmosphere is as stunning as always, and the story is minimally told and incredibly touching.

Bear in mind Trico does have a hidden trust meter and responds better when given attention and training. There's something satisfying about teaching him how to catch food barrels in midair, for example.

Overall The Last Guardian is one of the best games of 2016, and a must play if you're a fan of Team Ico games.

TheLastofUsRemastered(PS4) The Last of Us Remastered Action / Adventure / Survival No Twenty years after a pandemic radically transformed known civilization, infected humans run amuck and survivors kill one another for sustenance and weapons - literally whatever they can get their hands on. Joel, a salty survivor, is hired to smuggle a fourteen-year-old girl, Ellie, out of a rough military quarantine, but what begins as a simple job quickly turns into a brutal journey across the country.
Mad max ps4 cover version by domestrialization-d6zzg6n Mad Max Action / Driving / Harpoon Fishing / Survival No A fairly direct prequel to Fury Road, Mad Max is the game that fans of the series always wanted. Mostly silent protagonist, carbuilding/survival focused story that really picks up near the end, mentally fucked characters who make up cool words, everything you'd expect from the series, and you get to go to Gastown to boot. While the map is actually varied, it does tend to dip into the copypaste shit that plagues most open world games. Still worth a shot if you like the prospect of ushering War Boys off to Valhalla.

Marvels-Spider-Man Marvel's Spider-Man Action-Adventure / Doing Whatever a Spider Can No Spider-Man is back baby, and he's cooler than ever. Made by the developers of Ratchet & Clank, set in a gorgeous, lively rendition of Manhattan, Marvel's Spider-Man is a great open-world action game, heavily inspired by the Batman: Arkham series, sometimes even improving on them.

Combat is very similar, and although not as tight, it is lighter and more aerial, and overall really fun. You also get some stealth sequences, with a bunch of gadgets to play around with. The web-slinging is some of the best in any Spider-Man games, arguably as good if not better than in Spider-Man 2. Simply roaming around the city feels fantastic. The open-world system is however pretty formulaic, basically a Ubisoft open-world with towers to reveal parts of the map, main missions, side missions, and collectibles; it's not gonna blow your mind but it does the job. Story-wise the game begins like a fairly by-the-numbers Spider-Man story but it has its fair share of cool twists to keep you interested. You will probably get sick of the dumb puzzles and the boring MJ/Miles/Peter phases pretty quickly though (there's an option to skip the puzzles if you really hate them). Features state-of-the-art graphics and the soundtrack is really nice too.

It's an AMAZING Spider-Man game that, as virtually every professional critic said in the exact same tone, really makes you FEEEEEL like Spider-Man — and they wouldn't be wrong — with plenty of stuff to do, cool suits to unlock, and super-villain butts to kick. If you enjoyed the Batman: Arkham games and want more, or simply if you want a good Spidey game, you will love it.

Also the GOAT Raimi suit was added in a free update, unlocked from the get go, and if you're not wearing it as soon as you're able, then you're playing it wrong.

Megaman11PS4 Mega Man 11 Platformer No Mega Man returns after a long hiatus on his first 2.5D adventure! Introduces the Double Gear system, which allows to temporarily power up Mega Man's attacks or to slow down time, with the entire game designed after these new abilities, with the tried and true challenging but fair difficulty of the series.

Also available on PC

Mmxps4 Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1+2 Platformer No It's the 8 main Mega Man X games in one package. The box has one disc with 1-4 and another for 5-8 so you don't need to bother putting that one in if you don't want to(and you probably don't).

If you like the japanese music from some of these games or don't wan't the awful censoring on the X4 opening animation, try to get your hands on the japanese or chinese release. I'm pretty sure those versions come with the english games too.

MetalGearSolidVGroundZeroes(PS4) Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes Tactical Espionage Action No The semi-demo "prologue" to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Invade a U.S./Cuban base to save your friends. Additional missions use the same map, but change it so you have to assassinate soldiers/obtain enemy intelligence/save Hideo Kojima, allowing you to play in different ways. Many people complained about the incredibly short playtime of the game (around an hour for the main mission), so rent it first if you're not sure if you want it yet.

Also available on PC

MetalGearSolidVThePhantomPain Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Tactical Espionage Action Sorta The continuation of Ground Zeroes. More of an open world Metal Gear this time - you can try to get in without alerting anyone to your presence, and then go in guns blazing after that fails. Catch animals and send them to your Mother Base! Fight alongside a mute sniper in a bikini! Teach a wolf how to CQC! The choices are as limitless as the story is unfinished.

Note: The "sorta" in terms of always-online refers to FOB missions, where you can invade other players' Mother Bases and vice versa. There's also reportedly microtransactions related to base building, so tread with caution.

MetroRedux(PS4) Metro Redux FPS/Survival Horror No Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light brought together into one beautifully remastered game. Living in a radioactive Russian hellhole has never been so pretty!
Middle-earthShadowofMordor(PS4) Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Action RPG No A complex and beautiful RPG for people who just can't get enough Lord of the Rings or who want a challenge without the game being a Japanese import starring pretty big-haired teenagers. Game is piss easy unless you've never played an action game before.

Mhw Monster Hunter: World Monster Hunting No It's Monster Hunter, but now your casual friends can play too! One of the few examples of a game attempting to broaden it's playerbase by becomming more accesible and succeeding without compromising the spirit of the series. You hunt monsters, grind out materials for armor and weapons to go and fight more monsters.
MortalKombatX(PS4) Mortal Kombat X Fighting Yes FINISH HIM!

Mortal Kombat, now featuring Jason Voorhees and Predator!

Mkultra Mortal Kombat 11 Fighting Yes The third NetherRealm MK game is more of the same as MK 9/X. High impact fights and comically gory violence. The gimmick characters this time include The Joker, Terminator, Spawn, Robocop, and Rambo. It has a pretty bad unlocks system build to try and get you to just lazily pay to unlock things but if you ignore that there's a really fun fighter here.
Nierautops4 NieR: Automata Action No The sequel to one the seventh gen's best hidden gems. Turns out replacing an old man with a hot babe in a short skirt is what was needed to get people to care about NieR. Doesn't hurt that they replaced the questionable gameplay with Platinum, even though this is one of their weaker games it's a step above the prequel. Typical Yoko Taro depressing story which are always better than almost anything out there in games.

Also available on PC

Nierrep NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... Action No A sort-of remaster/director's cut of the original NieR made for the 10th anniversary of it's release. This version, which for the first time in the west replaces old man dad Nier with older brother Nier(who was only in the Japanese PS3 release originally), has a handful of new features. The combat is a smoothed out version of the shallow combat of the original, and the game's graphics were upscaled without losing too much of the original vibe. A handful of new missions were also added. If you never played the original game this is an adequate means for doing so now.

Ninjaps4 The Ninja Saviors: Return of the Warriors Beat 'em-up No A remake of 1994's Ninja Warriors. Play as one of five ninjas who has to save the day from an evil dystopian corporation. Each character plays totally different and have a bunch of awesome moves and combos to play with.
Niohps4 Nioh Action RPG No Ninja Gaiden meets Dark Souls. You play as a Scottish ninja, based on a real person, who's spirit is kidnapped by an evil wizard. You must travel to Japan in order to get her back. You fight all sorts of grotesque enemies and amazing bosses. There are 7 different melee weapon types and three different ranged weapons to choose from all with their own styles and unlockable combos. The postgame DLC campaigns are amazing, easily the best stuff in the game. A Complete Edition is sold digitally with all the DLC.

Also available on PC

Ceelo2 Nioh 2 Action RPG No More like a Nioh map pack than a full second game. A prequel to the original; you play as a silent custom character who works as a lieutenant in Nobunaga's army conquests and beyond. All the weapons return from the first game as well as new dual-axes. It's an easier and longer game than the original Nioh(sans DLC). Has a *lot* of reused content from the first game, to the point of laziness. Still, a pretty good action game.

Persona5 Persona 5 / Persona 5 Royal RPG No You got an assault charge for punching out a rapist, forcing you to transfer to the only school that's willing to accept you. On top of that you've gained the power to access the hearts of the corrupt, and decide to steal their darkest desires with the power of your Personas.

(very) Arguably the best entry of the Persona franchise, and widely considered one of the best JRPGs of all time, Persona 5 takes its tried and true formula and adds a fun Lupin the Third style heist element to keep things interesting.

With gorgeous art design, a dark, gripping story, a monstrous length (over a hundred hours for the main story alone!), a bounty of sidequests, and a rock solid battle system, Persona 5 must not be missed.

NOTE: The Persona 5 Royal edition is a massive expansion to the base game released in March of 2020. Including new characters, S.Links, combat mechanic changes and Skills; as well as an additional semester of game-play, story, expanded palaces and a whole host of quality of life improvements/additions too numerous to list.

If you are picking up a copy make sure it's the Royal version.

Pokrokps4 Pocky & Rocky Reshrined Arcade Shooter No Remake of the fantastic Natsume top-down shooter with co-op play. Adds new gameplay features and unlockable characters. Charming fantasy-Japan setting and excellent chiptune music. Not a long campaign, but meant to be replayed for fun or score.
Preyps4 Prey FPS / Immersive Sim No Atmospheric immersive sim by the Dishonored devs. Takes place aboard a space station seemingly empty aside from horrific shadow creatures. Has some Metroidvania-esqe elements where you find new weapons and gizmos that allow further exploration of previous areas of the station and opening shortcuts etc. Has some narrative choice elements as well. Unrelated to the 2006 game of the same name, the devs have even blamed lazy Bethesda marketing guys for that one.

Puyo1ps4 Puyo Puyo Tetris Puzzle No A quite unexpected puzzle crossover, thankfully it combines the two different gameplay styles remarkably well.
Pptet2 Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 Puzzle No A followup to the surprise hit, with new modes, enhanced online, and an RPG-like adventure mode. That said, it doesn't add a whole lot to the formula from the first game, so only pick this up if you really like the first game or are approaching the series for the first time.
Raiden5DCPS4 Raiden V: Director's Cut Shoot 'em Up No The newest entry in the Raiden series, which despite bad initial impressions by shmupfags proves it is a worthy successor to the classic titles.

Despite the "Director's Cut" in the title this is the exact same game as the Xbox One version.

RaymanLegends(PS4) Rayman Legends Platformer No The classic platforming legend Rayman is back with hard levels and fun, fast gameplay!
Reddeadredemption2
Red Dead Redemption II Action / Adventure / Open World No Beautiful open world game set in the old west and serves as a prequel to Red Dead Redemption. Play as a gang member on the run from the law in the 1890s. Rob stagecoaches, trains, banks and simple townsfolk or go fishing/hunting/gambling. Massive world with lots of sidequests and random events. The story is pretty good with a likeable main character. Just don't touch multiplayer, which was a shitfest from the get-go after Take-Two realized how much money GTA Online made.

Also available on PC

Remnant-From-the-Ashes Remnant: From the Ashes Third-Person Shooter No A gun-based Dark Souls rip-off from the guys who made the Darksiders games. You run around randomly genereated worlds set in different biomes shooting and smashing enemies and fighting a wide variety of interesting bosses. It's a run based game and items carry over between runs, so sometimes you'll get a key in a zone for a door that you can't get to without rerolling the zone or going to a friend's world. Has a lot of secrets and unlockables. Multiplayer isn't required but a lot of the game feels designed with it in mind.
RE2ps4 Resident Evil 2 Survival Horror No A complete remake from the ground up of the 1998 horror classic. Capcom went above and beyond to do it right and the game is really fucking good. It's over the shoulder third person instead of the original's fixed camera angles and some elements of the world and puzzles and characters are different but it's all still phenomenal. The changes they made to Mr. X in particular stand out. Even if you don't have nostalgia it's still one of the best modern horror games, especially at the AAA level.

Also available on PC

51Brdvq-uWL. AC Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Survival Horror No After a bunch of action-oriented games and becoming kind of stale in the horror market, Resident Evil returns with a fresh new start. Resident Evil 7 works both as a classic Resident Evil game in its structure, and as a modern horror game (think Outlast, etc.): first person, more focused on atmosphere, survival and scares. You play as Ethan, looking for his missing wife Mia after receiving a strange e-mail from her, and ending up trapped in the Baker homestead, a strange Bayou family that seems to be possessed by a spooky little girl. Wait, paranormal stuff in my Resident Evil ? Well, it may be more complicated than that. The story, like the gameplay, is both a good RE story, while very modern in horror standards, and referencing pretty much every horror movie in existence really nicely.

Whether you're a classic RE fan, a first person survival horror aficionado, or a horror movie buff, there's something there for you. It's engaging, really scary, and a lot of fun.

ResidentEvilRevelations2(PS4) Resident Evil: Revelations 2 Survival Horror

TPS

No More co-op TPS action in the style of RE5. This time one person plays as the shooter and the other plays as a more supportive character. The game is built around this dynamic and it's pretty interesting, but potentially also boring for the support player. Takes place between RE5 and 6 and features two intertwining storylines: in one you play as Barry Burton and a mysterious kid called Natalia, and in the other you play as Claire Redfield and Barry's daughter, Moira. Overall very fun and a similar experience to RE5, with the added benefit that partner A.I. is no longer useless, but it's really short. Note: The requirement for getting the good ending is bullshit, but goddamn that ending's dank as hell.

Rez Infinite PS4 cover Rez Infinite Rail shooter / rhythm No Eden, the world's most advanced artificial intelligence, is about to crash under the weight of too much knowledge. You are a computer virus whose task is to fight past her defenses to force a reboot. Remake of the Dreamcast cult classic, with improved graphics, an extra area, and support for PSVR. It's absolutely gorgeous and trippy: everything is timed to the music, and your actions become notes and beats, creating a synaesthetic spectacle.
Sem título-0
Rise of the Tomb Raider Action-Adventure No Sequel to the acclaimed reboot. This time, Lara goes to Russia to find an object that can provide immortality for whoever touches it (how original).

Since the original release was a Microsoft timed exclusive, the PS4 got a somewhat Ultimate edition with all DLC content, including some special low-poly outfits that you get after beating the game. Its an improvement of the first game overall: tons of collectibles, more optional tombs, side-quests (?!) and finally Lara has stopped using torches to enter dark places.

Also available on PC

Sekirops4 Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Rhythm No The Dark Souls/Bloodborne guys made a new game. You play as a shinobi in fuedal Japan who needs to rescue his young master from a clan who has kidnapped him in order to steal his blood. Unlike the Souls games there is very little customization and really only a handful of "correct" approaches to any combat encounter but in turn those encounters are super fine tuned. Combat is purely timing based, where the best way to kill an enemy isn't to whittle down their health bar but to tire them out by deflecting all their blows and forcing them to deflect yours until they are vulnerable enough to be stabbed in the face. Also no multiplayer, so you can't summon anyone to beat the bosses for you but you can't get invaded either. Somewhat divisive for people who liked the Souls series for it's customization or pvp or depressing world but it still has the super polished gameplay and tough but fair challenge of their other games.

Sotc-ps4
Shadow of the Colossus Action / Platformer No A cinematic game with very few "game-y" elements and a vague, open story. Your task is to travel a barren land, seek out, and slay sixteen lumbering giants. Remake of the PS2 classic. Not only does this game have better graphics, it can also take advantage of the PS4 Pro by increasing the resolution to 1440p (upscaled to 4k) and run at 60fps most of the time if set to performance mode. It also has the option to use either classic or modern controls.
Nocps4 Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster JRPG No An HD port of the PS2 classic. You control the Demi Fiend, a schoolboy turned into a demon whose actions will determine the shape of the world to come (our world has already ended). You can align yourself with one of several ideologies, which will affect the game's progression and ending. Recruit, fuse and use demons in battle; the Press Turn system heavily emphasizes exploiting the enemy's weaknesses to succeed. A very tough, intelligent and rewarding game. There is additional paid DLC to bring back "Dante from the Devil May Cry series", who was included for free in the original North American release. It is highly recommended that you get him though. The remaster also added an easier difficulty and voice acting, as well as redoing some of the visuals, for better or worse. Regardless it is one of the best JRPGs of all time. Also on Switch and PC.
SleepingDogsDefinitiveEdition(PS4) Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition Action

Sandbox

No You play as an undercover cop infiltrating a Hong Kong gang. It has a similar urban setting and open structure to the GTA games, with a richly detailed game world. Unlike GTA, combat is melee-focused with a similar system to the recent Batman games. The story is a bit of a letdown but Wei is a memorable protagonist, and there's lots of side-content to tackle if the main story starts boring you. This is also a good game if you enjoy ogling buff Asian men. Don't expect Yakuza or anything, though. Recipient of the Biggest waste of Emma Stone Award.

Also available on PC

ScVI Soulcalibur VI Fighting No Another solid entry in the Soulcalibur series. This time the guest character is Geralt from the Witcher. The character creater is kind of the star of this game. You can recreate almost anyone you can think of, albeit most will be horrible abominations. Kind of came and went at release due to coming out a week before Red Dead 2.
71Xz9rNV5HL. AC SL1245 Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Action-Adventure No The first single-player Star Wars game since Disney bought the IP and EA is in charge of the games is your typical AAA action game – nothing original by any means, as it borrows a lot from what is popular nowadays (Dark Souls, Uncharted…) but it’s pretty nice.

Cal Kestis was a padawan when he survived Order 66, and five years later hides as a scrapper on a junkyard planet, until he’s thrown into an adventure where he’ll have to become the Jedi he was supposed to be. The story is fine, especially if you’re a fan who’s been following nu-canon as there are a lot of throwbacks to the original trilogies, the cartoons, the new movies, the comics… and it fits in there pretty nicely. The characters are endearing and there’s a couple of great moments.

It kind of plays like a Souls game, meaning there’s an emphasis on duels, blocking and dodging, and they had the decency to not make the game piss-easy. However it’s pretty janky and it can get annoying when it’s too imprecise or your character just decides not to do what you ask him. Travelling between different planets that are surprisingly well fleshed-out and sprawling is fun, although there isn’t much to do besides following the story. Visually it’s mostly gorgeous and sometimes horrendous (Jesus Christ those PS2 wookiees).

In the end it’s a fine action game lacking a lot of polish, but if you’re a Star Wars fan it’ll probably scratch that itch. And customizing your lightsaber is cool.

Sdig2ps4 SteamWorld Dig 2 Metroidvania No Another SteamWorld game, this time another metroidvania. You dig down into dungeons to find enemies, loot, and upgrades. Has a grimy steampunk look and a really nice artstyle to compliment the addicting gameplay.
SFVAEPS4 Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition Fighting No This is it, Street Fighter V the way it should've been at launch. It only took Capcom two bloody years, eh? All characters from the first two seasons come unlocked from the start and it adds a HUGE arcade mode, perfect for the players who don't care about playing online.

If you were stupid enough to buy the vanilla version it will automatically update to this for free, thankfully.

Sor4ps4 Streets of Rage 4 Beat 'em Up No A return for the 90s beat 'em up classic series. Plays similarly to the old games, a 2D side scrolling brawler with 4 pretty unique characters each with different moves and combos. With pretty slick hand drawn art and great music. A surprisingly good revival for the series.
Tacogps4 Tactics Ogre: Reborn SRPG No A remaster of the 2010 PSP remake of the 1995 SNES strategy RPG classic. Micromanaging your team is now easier as units level individually. New controls and smarter AI make combat way less arduous and more engaging, making this the definitive version of the game.
Turtcowps4 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection Various No A huge collection of classic TMNT games. Includes Arcade/NES/SNES/Genesis/Gameboy releases, including both versions of Turtles in Time and all three versions of Tournament Fighter.
Turtshredps4 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge Beat 'em up No A love-letter/followup to Turtles in Time by the Scott Pilgrim devs. Play as any of the four turtles or Spliter, April, and the unlockable Casey Jones. Longer than average beat'em up that has you running around New York fighting basically every iconic series villian. Multiple unlockable moves for each character further adds to replayability. You can throw enemies towards the screen.
Tekken7
Tekken 7 Fighting No The seventh main entry in the Tekken series. If you have ever played a Tekken game, you know what to expect: lots of characters, great graphics and a great soundtrack. The most balanced Tekken to date. The game is sadly lacking a bit in offline content, there is a story mode but it's quite lackluster. And the arcade endings we all know and love have been replaced with character episodes that are really bad. Features Akuma from the Street Fighter games.
Tetriseffect Tetris Effect Puzzle No Super trippy Tetris where the music plays to the pace you're playing at and the further along you get the more things crescendo until you're on some wild jounrey. Arguably the coolest version of the classic puzzle game.
Titanfall2ps4 Titanfall 2 Mech FPS No The first game in the parkour and mechs series was an Xbox exclusive and multiplayer only but the sequel came out on PS4 as well. This time however the big brains at EA released the week in between Call of Duty and Battlefield so no one bought it. It's a shame too because the multiplayer is awesome but pretty dead at this point. There is a fantastic single player campaign. It's on the short side but if you can find a copy on the cheap it's worth an afternoon.
TombRaiderDefinitiveEdition(PS4) Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition Action-Adventure No Join young Lara Croft back when she was just a normal college student and not an amazing explorer on an adventure with her adopted father and unravel an Asian-flavored mystery on a dangerous island. This game was heavily praised for it's use of character development and richly detailed maps. Quite QTE-heavy and plays like Uncharted with marginally more freedom. If you hate final bosses, rest easy; there isn't one. No more dankass tiddies either, but DAT ASS was fat.

Trimanaps4 Trials of Mana JRPG No 3D remake of the Japan-only Square classic Seiken Densetsu 3 (SNES). Choose your three-person party and embark on a fantasy adventure with fully-active combat and a class-based progression system. Includes new content and character-specific story resolutions. Fairly easy, but enchanting, and essential for retro JRPG fans.

Umvc3ps4 Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Fighting No Among the best fighters of the seventh generation, UMvC3 has a PS4 port as well. 48 characters split between both companies, yet surprisingly balanced. Do not play MvC Infinite, it's garbage. This is the MvC you want on PS4.

Unkarted Uncharted 4: A Thief's End Kart Racer Action-Adventure No Nathan Drake, now retired, has to go back on one last kart racing tournament treasure hunt in order to get his older brother's ass out of a sling. Arguably as good if not better than Uncharted 2, and indisputably the prettiest game in the series, and on the PS4 itself, to date. The game also takes several elements from Last of Us as well as earlier entries to the series, so expect more stealth based gameplay or prepare to get completely surrounded much of the time. The story is classic Uncharted fare, but somewhat darker, with its biggest highlight being the story behind the treasure itself. The inclusion of Nathan Drake's brother, Sam, is also a welcome addition to the cast, and handled well. The puzzles are as easy as always, though there seem to be more of them this time around and they don't detract from the overall atmosphere. Gameplay is still very linear, but has a couple of small open world segments and various branching paths throughout, giving you a little more room to explore. All in all it's a really shitty kart racer a satisfying conclusion to a great series.
UntilDawn(PS4) Until Dawn Interactive Drama / Survival Horror No It's like one of those cliche horror movies where a bunch of teenagers stay at a spooky place and start dying one by one, except you choose the outcomes and it has multiple endings. Think a Telltale game where the choices actually matter.
Valkreps4 Valkyria Chronicles Remastered SRPG No Port of the PS3 strategy RPG. Allows you to manually control each unit on their turn, in third-person shooter form. A very anime story that dips into drama, romance and comic relief with a pseudo-magical wartime backdrop. Every recruit has their own traits and personality. Pleasant watercolor-like visuals and sound effects. Definitely a successful genre experiment with somewhat unbalanced difficulty (leaning towards overly easy), worth a look for SRPG or RPG fans. 2 is stuck on the PSP and 3 never came out in the west.
Valk4ps4 Valkyria Chronicles 4 SRPG No The fourth game in Sega's pretty SRPG wargame series. If you liked the first game and want more, it's acceptable to skip to 4 because 2 is a pain in the ass to play and 3 never made it here(and also is evidently pretty meh). Adds some new units but is otherwise the same pretty good SRPG game as the first one.
TheWalkingDeadATelltaleGameSeriesTheCompleteFirstSeason(PS4) The Walking Dead: A Telltale Game Series - The Complete First Season Graphic Adventure No Come for the zombies, stay for innocent little Clemetine. Manly tears will be shed! Warning: this is pretty much a Visual Novel with some point and click mechanics added in, so don't expect high action even if the plot largely makes up for it.
TheWalkingDeadATelltaleGameSeriesSeasonTwo(PS4) The Walking Dead: Season Two - A Telltale Game Series Adventure No Part two of the series plays like part one while continuing Clementine's story. Some have said it lacks the emotional punch of part one due to having too many characters, but others are just happy to see what happenes to our little girl.
Wargroove Wargroove SRPG No Solid medieval style Advance Wars clone. Doesn't quite match up in the aesthetic department but good gameplay.
Wugreps4 Wild Guns Reloaded Shooter No Enhanced port of the SNES arcade-style gallery-shooter, with local co-op. Features two brand-new playable characters, and various graphical improvements. Neat steampunk-Wild West setting.
TheWitcher3WildHunt(PS4) The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Action RPG/Narrative Fantasy No You are Geralt of Rivia, a witcher - that is, a monster hunter and mercenary. Travel around the world, helping or hindering others, while fighting the mysterious army known only as "Wild Hunt". While combat may vary in enjoyability from person to person, the real hook is the story: you have 50 hours worth of gameplay, and that's from the side missions alone. Worth a try just to see how much love CD Projekt RED puts in its games.

This goes for the DLC as well. Hearts of Stone and Blood & Wine are both well worth the extra money, pack on around 30 extra hours, and have great stories to tell in their own right.

TheWolfAmongUsATelltaleGameSeries(PS4) The Wolf Among Us - A Telltale Game Series Adventure No Sick of zombeis but want more Visual Novel style gameplay? You're in the right place. In Fabletown all of our myths and legends are real people with real problems. In fact, someone just got murdered... the first someone in hundreds of years. As Sheriff Bigsby Wolfe (aka "The Big Bad Wolf") it's up to you to find the killer and put an end to this before Fabletown tears itself apart. Not as Furry as it sounds.
W101reps4 The Wonderful 101: Remastered Action-Adventure/Hack n' Slash No No one owned a WiiU so it can be forgiven if you didn't play the original release of this game, but now its out on PS4/Switch/PC so you no longer have an excuse. A top tier classic action game from Hideki Kamiya and Platinumgames. You play as a group of superheroes that can combine together to make various weapons and fight aliens. Amazing boss fights. It's a (vague) spiritual successor to Viewtiful Joe and Kamiya is currently working on another superhero game to finish the psuedo-trilogy.
Yakuza-Ishin Yakuza: Ishin
(Ryu ga Gotoku: Ishin)
Action-Adventure/Open World No All the punk punching, manly mini-game filled goodness you can expect from the Yakuza series, but thrown back to 19th century Japan. Huge amount of content for completionists, super comfy historical Japan setting with epic MANLY HONOR AND PRIDE plot, sword fighting, gardening, and more. What else can you ask for? A Western release apparently; Ishin is only available in Japan. With no English subtitles or menu options, only those familiar with the series or Japanese would be able to make it through this title, if it weren't for this excellent guide.
Yakuza Yakuza 0 Action-Adventure/Open World No Set in money crazed 1980's Japan, Yakuza 0 serves as a more in depth origin story than what we were given in early titles in the series. Saga protagonist Kazuma Kiryu doesn't even have his back tattoo finished in this title. With two interesting playable characters who battle with three fighting styles each, this is probably the best combat found in the franchise. Along with more substories, more, crazier minigames, and incredible visuals, this might be the overall best Yakuza game, period.

Y6ps4 Yakuza 6: The Song of Life Action-Adventure/Open World No The 7th game in a series no one in the west gave a shit about until the 6th entry. If you've played 1-5 and 0 you know what you're getting and if you haven't then what the fuck are you doing? Go play the others first. The Grand Finale of Kiryu's story. They somehow roped in motherfucking Beat Takeshi to voice a major character, even though he hates vidya and technology.

Likeadragonps4 Yakuza: Like a Dragon JRPG No The 8th mainline Yakuza game(known as Yakuza 7 in Japan) takes the series in a very different direction. Discarding the beatemup combat(now exclusive to the Judgement games) for a turn-based JRPG system with a Final Fantasy V-like jobs system. With Kiryu's story ended after Y6, Like a Dragon stars the affable gangster Ichiban Kasuga and a group of friends he makes on his journey to discover why his old boss has abandoned him after a long prison stint. The blend of serious melodrama and ridiculous writing the series is known for is maybe at it's best here, and the new characters are all fantastic. The combat can be deep, albeit outside of a few moments not terribly challenging. The game's spin on traditional JRPG elements and its open love for Dragon Quest are fantastic and look to be a great kickstart for a series that was getting stagnant.

Kiwami1 Yakuza Kiwami Action-Adventure/Open World No A remake of the first game in the series but in the modern engine. The original Yakuza is pretty clunky so this is an improvement in the gameplay department. Has some new features as well but they aren't really worth the trouble.

Also available on PC

Kiwami2 Yakuza Kiwami 2 Action-Adventure/Open World No A remake of arguably the best Yakuza game. They got a television drama writer to do the story for this game and it shows. It has one of the best narratives in a game of it's era. They made some changes to the combat that are hit and miss but this version is a lot easier to find than a PS2 copy so if you don't want to go through the trouble then this is a fine substitute.

The-Yakuza-Remastered-Collection The Yakuza Remastered Collection Action-Adventure/Open World No Remastered versions of Yakuzas 3/4/5. These versions added back content cut from the original western releases of all three games and also allowed for 1080p/60fps performance. This is also the only way to own a physical copy of Yakuza 5 in the west as it originally was download only due to the series not being popular enough here to warrant a full physical release. Thanks to Yakuza 0 enough normies finally got into the series and Sega decided to put this release out here. All three games are amazing and now you can own all 7 mainline games on one console.

Ys8PS4 Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana Action-RPG No Despite being a numbered title this game actually takes place between Ys V and Ys VI, as Adol and a bunch of other people end on a mysterious island and must find a way out. This game brings back the party system from the two previous titles and adds a lot more exploration, making this the longest title in the series so far. Unique in that unlike other entries you don't have towns, instead you must find the other survivors from the ship crash scattered along the island and help build a settlement where they will share items and other stuff in exchange for materials as there is no actual money in the game.

KEEP IN MIND: This game was localized by NIS America, arguably the worst western localization company. Tons of bugs that weren't there in the first place are added and awful translations ensue when a game is touched by them, and YS VII was no exception. However, they did release a patch that fixed some of the bugs and edited some of the dialogue. Buy used or learn 日本語 already and import.

Mvrs Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner M∀RS Action No A port of the classic second PS2 mech action game from Hideo Kojima. Runs better than the PS3/360 versions and comes with a first-person mode for PSVR. One of the best mech games ever made.

Also available on PC.
